May 31, 2011 in May Design Challenge by David Bill
May brought the start of our virtual challenges. In this month’s challenge, we asked:
“What is the tagline for the future of the library?”
We collected your responses in the form of tweets, Facebook wall posts, and blog comments.
In addition to your contributions, we interviewed a number of experts for our first podcast, asking them the same question.
In the podcast, which is available below, we interviewed experts from the worlds of libraries, education, and architecture.
Our contributors included:
- Buffy Hamilton
- Helene Blowers
- Patrick Bassett
- Howard Rheingold
- Will Richardson
- Peter Brown
- David Staley
Enjoy the podcast and let us know what you think of their interpretation of the future of the library.

Great ideas! I, too, kept thinking about the idea of “library in your pocket”. Where libraries used to be where the information was “stored”, we are now in kind of a situation of “water water everywhere”, but without libraries and librarians to share their secrets, the average folks that don’t study this stuff all day, are likely to feel that there’s “not a drop to drink”.

I love the term “shared discovery”. There is no library anywhere that doesn’t facilitate discovery and collaborative learning in some way. But in the best of them, active processes and participation are at a level that makes them indistinguishable from the greatest, most effective classrooms you could find anywhere.
